TMC is here to assist you with all inquiries concerning your Mitsubishi MET turbocharger
and the interface between turbocharger and engine.

The purpose of turbocharging is to compress the fresh charge air of the reciprocating
engine, in order increase the available air amount for combustion in the cylinder. Thereby
can the specific engine output be raised, often with a factor 3 to -4, compared to the same
engine charged with only atmospheric air pressure. At the same time is the specific fuel
consumption reduced, as the relative portion of heat- and friction losses becomes smaller
at the turbocharged engine.

Although the turbocharger is a simple-looking machine, is the thermodynamic interaction
between a turbocharger with freely rotating rotor and a reciprocating engine a rather
complicated matter.

Also, the tip speed of the rotating components in turbochargers is very high, often above
500 m/s. To optimise efficiencies and capacities, caps and clearances around the rotor are
kept as small as practically possible, while at the same time compressor vanes and turbine
blades are made relatively thin.

A modern turbocharger is therefore a delicate piece of machinery, which requires correct
matching, installation, operation and maintenance, in order to operate according to your
expectations.

For performance and emission- optimization of engines, the turbocharging, air and gas
management systems are getting increasingly more complicated and controls are
integrated in the engine’s control and monitoring system. This includes control of waste-
gates and by-passes, sequential turbocharging systems, exhaust gas recirculation
systems, 2-stage systems etc.

TMC therefore offers advice and trouble-shooting to European owners and -operators of
MET turbochargers about issues such as:
